Miami Tornados is the flag team of the University of Miami in the Atlantic Coast Conference of the first division of the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivisions. Five times, the team has taken first place in national championship polls published by Associated Press. Those were the polls for 1983, 1987,1989, 1991, and 2001. Currently, however, the team ranks number 11 in the All-Time Associated Press National Championship Polls. The top three places are occupied by, from one to three, Oklahoma, Michigan and Ohio State.Miami Tornados

Michigan and Ohio State in descending order.

The coveted Heisman Trophy has been won by this team twice. The team has the longest home-winning streak on record in college football history. This record of 58 straight wins was set between 1985 and 1994, breaking the record 57 straight wins of Alabama between 1963 and 1982.

The team started out as a team of freshmen in 1926. Its first records in varsity competition were not notable. The team was then playing as an independent. In 1929, the first coach was replaced by J. Burton Rix who was hired by local businessmen. That was also the year that the team joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. It was during Rix's tenure that the team experienced is first winning season. His term was short-lived due to the crash of the stock market in that same year.

The team won their association's title in 1937 after Florida was routed by them 19-7. However, the team chose to become independent again in the same yearMiami Tornados

Throughout the course of its history, the team has been under the guidance of many coaches. Irl Tubbs stayed two years with the team from 1935 to 1936. His record is 11-5-2 giving a percentage of .667. Jack Harding did two stints with the team, one from 1937 to 1942 and then from 1945 to 1947. His record stands at 54-32-3 for a percentage of .624. Andy Gustafson stayed with the team for 16 years from 1948 to 1963. His record stands at 93-65-3 (.697).Miami Tornados

Starting with Howard Schnellenberger (1979 to 1983) the ratings of the teams records have gone up to .719. The highest record so far is that of coach Dennis Erickson who stayed 6 years with the team (1989 to 1994). His record stands at 63-9-0 for a percentage of .875. With Randy Shannon who took over in 2007 and is currently the team's coach, the record dips once more to 21-17-0 (.553) in the three years he has held that position .

Of course there is nothing to exclude the fact that in the coming seasons, the Hurricanes will recall their earlier successes.

The Team has so far won 9 conference championships. Seven of its members have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. They are Jack Harding (Coach), Andy Gustafson (Coach), Ted Hendriks (Defensive end), Donn Bosseler (Fullback), Don James (Coach), Bennie Blades (Safety), Gino Toretta (Quarterback).

The team has had two notable winning streaks. Miami Tornados

One was for winning 34 consecutive games from 2000 to 2003. The other was for winning 29 games continuously from 1990 to 1993.Miami Tornados

Today, however, there is much for the team to recover in terms of playing tactics
