The Miami Severe weather * Records That Can't Be Handled
The University of Miami is represented by this football team in the Atlantic Coast Conference of the NCAA's first division Football Bowl Subdivision. It has, since the program was created garnered top place five times in the national championship polls conducted by Associated Press. These distinctions were for the year 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 2001. As of writing, the team now ranks 11th in the All-Time Associated Press National Championship Polls. The first three are Oklahoma, Michigan and Ohio State in descending order.
The Heisman Trophy has twice been awarded to one of its members. The lengthiest home-winning streak in the annals of college football is also held by this team. This is for 58 straight wins between 1985 and 1994. This broke the record set by Alabama between 1963 and 1982. They had 57 wins.
In 1926 the team was formed from a group of freshmen players. Its first years of play are not notable. It began as an independent team and later joined the Southeastern Intercollegiate Athlete Association in 1929. In the same year, the first coach was replaced by J. Burton Rix who gave the team their first taste of a winning season. The crash of the stock market in the same year, halted all funding for the team and Rix's stint was stopped abruptly.r.
In 1937, the team won the SIAA title when they defeated the Florida Gators 19-7. At that same year the team went independent again, abandoning the SIAA.
Throughout the course of its history, the team has been under the guidance of many coaches. Irl Tubbs stayed two years with the team from 1935 to 1936. His record is 11-5-2 giving a percentage of .667. Jack Harding did two stints with the team, one from 1937 to 1942 and then from 1945 to 1947. His record stands at 54-32-3 for a percentage of .624. Andy Gustafson stayed with the team for 16 years from 1948 to 1963. His record stands at 93-65-3 (.697).
Starting with Howard Schnellenberger (1979 to 1983) the ratings of the teams records have gone up to .719. The highest record so far is that of coach Dennis Erickson who stayed 6 years with the team (1989 to 1994). His record stands at 63-9-0 for a percentage of .875. With Randy Shannon who took over in 2007 and is currently the team's coach, the record dips once more to 21-17-0 (.553) in the three years he has held that position .

But since Shannon is still coach, there is still plenty of opportunity to improve that rating. And we think in a few more seasons it will.
The Team has so far won 9 conference championships. Seven of its members have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. They are Jack Harding (Coach), Andy Gustafson (Coach), Ted Hendriks (Defensive end), Donn Bosseler (Fullback), Don James (Coach), Bennie Blades (Safety), Gino Toretta (Quarterback).
The team has had two notable winning streaks. One was for winning 34 consecutive games from 2000 to 2003. The other was for winning 29 games continuously from 1990 to 1993.
Today, however, there is much for the team to recover in terms of playing tactics
